Remembrances of Larry Hjelm
Terry Ronald
Larry was a dear colleague, friend, social companion and fellow traveler on numerous journeys for lab-related and other activities to near and far-flung locations across the world. Over his long career, his knowledge, experience and personable style made him a vital contributor to the functioning of ML, not just for his technical expertise, but also for his management roles, as is evident in his bio description. I know there are many others who knew him who would feel the same way about him, and probably would happily go into much more detail about their interactions with him. These included the day-to-day work environment, but also the social times spent with him on fishing and hunting trips, excursions on the Paul Propp "ML Yacht" (noted as part of a remembrance of Paul Propp by Merrill Minges), and on other memorable occasions. He is especially remembered for the annual, famous Glugg parties at his home every Christmas season, where he and his wife, Joan, hosted a countless number of people from the lab, enjoying their camaraderie, as well as serving the Swedish spiced mulled wine that gave its name to the traditional festive gathering.
To acknowledge his life with us in some small way, here are a few photos that were contributed by colleagues, friends and his family.
