Remembrances of Nate Tupper
Al Gunderson:
I worked with Nate on the B-1 startup and had a high regard for his writing capabilty. When we were just getting into using fracture mechanics in design, we needed a lot of info on this technology. Nate, Howard Wood from the Flight Dynamics, and me from ML had all taken an introductory course from Dr. Paul Paris, one of the early leaders in the field. Nate was assigned by the B-1 Structures Chief Jack Carlson to write the "strawman" design document for the AF. And he did a great job of pulling our assembled knowledge into the guidance we needed to give to our contractor Rockwell. It took about two years even with our new leader Chuck Tiffany to get the final MS1530 document accepted.
